Registered Dietitian and nationally recognized nutritionist, Layne Lieberman, brings more than 25 years of experience to Boulder-owned and operated Alfalfa’s Market

BOULDER, Colo. (Feb. 14, 2013) – Alfalfa’s, a Boulder, Colo. owned and operated natural and organic market, announced today that leading nutrition expert, Layne Lieberman, has joined the company in the newly created position of Vice President of Marketing and Consumer Relations. Ms. Lieberman brings more than 25 years’ experience to Alfalfa’s as a leader in marketing and educating the public about healthy, local and organic foods in the retail food environment.

“At Alfalfa’s, it is our goal to be a resource to our community for solutions that meet their individual health, wellness and culinary needs,” said Mark Retzloff, founder and President of Alfalfa’s. “We are thrilled to have someone with Layne’s knowledge and deep experience on board. As a registered dietitian and established nutrition industry expert, she will provide educational opportunities and guidance to help our consumers meet their healthy living goals.”

With significant experience in menu development for restaurants and food retailers, Ms. Lieberman has worked with high profile chefs to create and market healthy menus, and to provide nutritional analysis for their menu development.  A native of New York, she spent 20 years as the director of nutrition for America’s first supermarket chain, King Kullen Grocery Company. Her work at King Kullen positioned this conventional supermarket as a national leader in selling and marketing natural and organic foods. During her tenure at King Kullen, Ms. Lieberman developed and marketed nutrition programs for this family-owned chain of 49 supermarkets serving a diverse customer base. In addition to educating and introducing consumers to organic and natural foods, she helped to create the vision of Wild By Nature Market, a subsidiary of King Kullen.

Prior to joining the retail food industry, Ms. Lieberman founded the ground-breaking Nutrition Learning Centers in Long Island, NY, which allowed consumers to shop for natural foods, learn about healthy cooking and receive nutritional counseling all under the same roof. Throughout her career, as an editor, consultant and spokesperson, Ms. Lieberman has helped educate people on a variety of nutrition topics, including heart disease, diabetes, weight management and healthy menu development. She has served on various non-profit Boards and, for more than 20 years, has been a Board member, menu consultant, fundraiser and spokesperson for the American Heart Association. In fact, in June 2012, Ms. Lieberman received the Distinguished Heart Health Achievement Award from the American Heart Association.

“I was first introduced to Alfalfa’s in the early 1990s when I was working for King Kullen,” said Lieberman. “I then met one of the founders, Mark Retzloff when he was with Horizon Organic Dairy and had come to our stores to sell this new organic milk and I helped to convince our buyers to carry it. Alfalfa’s was known as trailblazers in natural and organic foods retail, and they were a resource to their consumers for health and wellness.”

“I cannot think of another market that has such a strong commitment to organic and local foods with as much transparency as Alfalfa’s,” said Lieberman. “One hundred percent of the ingredients used in our prepared foods is the best quality and is organic whenever possible, and 96 percent of the produce we sell is organic. I look forward to working with the people of Boulder to go beyond the predictable and to be responsive to their needs as a store that delivers transparency in solutions for healthy living.”
