Too Much Processed Food At Nutrition Conference

Finally, some real food! There is so much processed food at this event and I just wanted to thank Safeway for displaying organically grown apples!

I attended the FNCE-Food & Nutrition Conference & Expo in Philadelphia on October 8, 2012 and was horrified to see the rows and rows of processed food being marketed and advertised to registered dietitians. It was almost impossible to find a whole food—not even a carrot stick—in the huge exhibit floor of the Philadelphia Conference Center.

Here we (registered dietitians) gather from around the world to hear about how Americans are becoming more and more obese, ill and allergic to foods as a result of the fast food culture in our society. Yet, the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics accepts money from fast food, junk food and processed food companies to display these unhealthy choices at our educational conferences. It just doesn’t seem ethical!

And just because a donut is gluten-free, doesn’t make it healthy—it’s still full of sugar, rice flour and deep-fried!
